Dog in Lake
Having spent most of my life abroad, I eventually returned to my birthplace in North Macedonia, settling in the small lakeside resort of Pretor, by Lake Prespa. What was meant to be a short, temporary stay has now extended into its eighth year. Though the area is nearly deserted during the autumn and winter months, I’ve embraced a “back to nature” lifestyle and remain here year-round. Most of the village consists of seasonal or weekend villa dwellers, with only a handful of permanent residents. Here I came face-to-face with the cruel reality faced by stray dogs. Despite its enchanting natural beauty, this place harbors individuals whose attitudes toward animals are primitive and inhumane. Poisonings, beatings, hangings, abandonment, puppies tossed in garbage bins or left to die in remote areas - these acts of cruelty are tragically common. I became an ardent rescuer, which has led me to be treated with the same disdain and hostility as the dogs I care for. I’ve been called names, physically attacked, and denounced to authorities - resulting in constant fight and deep emotional stress. Yet, in a daily battle of “one against all,” my dogs and I persevere. Alone, we face obstacles and absurdities, drawing strength from one another.
